It's a hard movie to watch.ĭoes the fact that the movie left me feeling dead inside count as enjoyment? I guess it could. If you're watching for story, you'll probably be able to watch it in either its cut or uncut versions once or twice. If you want to watch mindless bloodshed, the same applies. If you want to watch porn, you'll probably get some decent value out of the uncut version with judicious use of the "scene select" function. So, basically, the creators did a great job of character development in the short time they were given, considering the emotional reaction I still have to these characters. You really do get the feeling that offing these two would be doing a service to mankind. They are rapists and murderers and all around bastards. Their handlers, Akai and Kanie, are two of the most disgusting individuals ever to grace the screen, and we are shown this at every possible opportunity. This is, in many ways, the catalyst that leads to the tragic events that follow. He is nowhere near as good an assassin as Sawa, but he is much more human. Oburi is the other assassin, a young man who has done his best to try and maintain some semblance of normality despite his job. You never get much into her head, but you get the feeling that she's had to kill most of her emotions due to the circumstances of her life, which are pretty horrific. But unlike a subsequent series by the same creator (Mezzo Forte) the hentai aspects actually enhance the story, instead of being just tacked-on porn. This is an X-rated world of sex and violence. This is more like Bambi accidentally running through Nazi Germany during the height of the atrocities. Here's a hint: this is not Bambi running through the forest. The rest of the story basically focuses on the consequences of that belief. But when she encounters another assassin (a boy named Oburi) she starts to think that there might be a way out of her terrible life. She works as an assassin for a total bastard who forces her into his bed on a regular basis. Her parents were killed when she was a young girl, and all she has left of them are two earrings. the background music is a weird mix of porno jazz and fever-dream instrumentals that serve to perfectly offset the horrors you are seeing on screen. Voice acting is decent, and that's all I really have to say. Her eyes seem to have no life in them at all, like a department store mannikin. Character designs are well done: Sawa is beautiful, but also fairly disturbing. Probably the worst part is what they don't show: moments where Sawa's mind flashes back to her past, usually in her darkest moments. Nice and stylish, in a nightmare fever-dream sort of way. The main character is a dead-eyed assassin who is routinely raped by her handler, who basically lives a life that kills her soul a little more every day.Īnd yet, this movie has somehow become a cult classic, and made it into Animerica's list of the "top ten fight scenes." But it's not for everyone. Girls stabbing people through the hands with knitting needles level violent. Bullets blowing up inside people level violent. There is an edited version out there, and it cuts out about a quarter of the total running time.
